Language Enrichment Associates

Pre-One Language Enrichment:  This class is designed to introduce students to a foreign language for the first time.  While highlighting the four skill areas of language acquisition, it recognizes that a large obstacle to language acquisition rests in speaking and listening.  The course will focus on the spoken language, introducing communication skills, vocabulary and structures using daily routines and common activities.  Audio-visual and technological materials will be incorporated, along with some light readings.  It is intended for those beginning the language or for review for those students with some previous exposure.


Pre-Two Language Enrichment:  This class is designed to re-introduce and re-enforce Level One vocabulary and grammatical concepts.  While highlighting the four skill areas of language acquisition, it intends to bring students to a more comfortable ability in speaking and listening in Spanish.  The course will focus on the spoken language, using communication skills, vocabulary and structures to enhance and strengthen each student’s abilities.  Audio-visual and technological materials will be incorporated, along with some light readings.  It is intended for those who are moving into a Level Two foreign language class but struggled or were uncomfortable with their performance in Level One.

The goals of Language Enrichment Associates Programs are:

1. To bring an appropriate level of fluidity and comfort to students in the language to enhance their study;

2. To break down mental barriers and the “I can’t learn a second language” attitudes which unnecessarily block language learning;

3. To equip students to study more efficiently, effectively and consistently as they continue in the foreign language studies;

4. To bring motivation and excitement to Foreign language students.

By having periodic assessments, but not focusing on grades or grading, students are freed from the pressures of purely academic standards.  This, in turn, allows them to reduce mental blocks and ease their achievement in their foreign language class.

The class will be conducted in the target language as much as possible, using English to explain and ease language acquisition.  There will be extensive oral and listening exercises, often in paired or group work.  Written and reading assignments will re-enforce the vocabulary and grammatical points. 

As an assessment tool only, quizzes and tests will be incorporated into the class on a regular basis to help students gauge in which areas they need to focus.  Students will not receive a final grade per se, but rather a written assessment of their work over the course to help in their future foreign language studies.
